Dallas County area schools offer free meals for children

To ensure that students get at least one balanced meal a day while schools are closed in efforts to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, Dallas County school districts will distribute free sack lunches to families with children under 18. 

All meals will include a protein selection, grain, fruit, vegetable and milk. Children must be present to claim a meal, and a breakfast and lunch will be distributed for each child in a vehicle or at the pickup site. These meals are not to be consumed on site.

Participating school districts and distribution sites include:

  • ADM Community School District, starting March 23:
  • Minburn School Building, 9:45-10:30 a.m.            
  • Adel Elementary, 11-11:45 a.m.
  • ADM Middle/High School, 11-11:45 a.m.
  • DeSoto Intermediate, 12:30-1:15 p.m.
  • Dallas Center-Grimes Community School District, starting March 25:
  • Distribution sites are curbside pickup at Prairie Elementary and the east Door of Dallas Center Elementary. Meals are available for pickup between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
  • Perry Community School District:
  • Perry Elementary:  Pick up meals by the PACES entrance/bus drop off site from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Perry High School: Pick up meals at the main door of the high school from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Van Meter Community School District: Breakfasts and lunches are available as grab and go meals as of March 23, for Van Meter students from preschool to 12th grade.  The district requests that families contact Barb Sandusky at barb.sandusky@vmbulldogs.com, to help with planning.
  • Prairie Village: Van at the main entrance, from 11 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Crestview Estates, at the corner of Bulldog and Long Avenues, from 11:35 a.m. to 12:05 p.m.
  • Bus pick up lane at the East Dining Hall of the Secondary Building from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Waukee Community School District: breakfasts and lunches for children will be available grab and go style.
  • Windfield West Apartments: 75 SE Windfield Pkwy, at the basketball court
  • Sun Prairie Apartments: 6137 Vista Drive, West Des Moines, at the playground closest to the corner of Vista Dr and 60th St.
The Woodward-Granger Community School District has created a small food pantry stocked by the Food Bank of Iowa and pre-packaged items will be available from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the front entry of the elementary school, 2002 Oak Street.
