Matthew McDermott, an attorney with Belin McCormick, P.C. in Des Moines, has been selected by Gov. Kim Reynolds to serve on the Iowa Supreme Court.
McDermott, who served a six-year stint as the attorney for the state’s Republican Party, is taking the seat of Justice David Wiggins. Wiggins was a Democratic appointee of former Gov. Tom Vilsac and served as the chief justice at the time of his retirement.
Since taking office, Reynolds has put her personal stamp on the supreme court with four appointees.
“Matt is a talented, smart, and astute lawyer with deep Iowa roots,” Reynolds told KCAU. “His commitment to the rule of law and passion for service will now benefit all Iowans as he joins the Iowa Supreme Court.”
McDermott received an undergraduate degree as the University of Iowa and went to the West Coast for his law degree at the University of California, Berkeley.
He served on the Iowa Legal Aid Board of Directors as president. He was also named the 2020 “Lawyer of the Year” in Bet-the-Company Litigation in Des Moines, the second time he has won the honor.
