Several West Des Moines residents were issued a tree removal notice after a major emerald ash borer (EAB) infestation, according to the city’s website on July 14.

EABs have already caused several trees that weren’t treated to die quickly. As a result, homeowners that had ash trees were told to remove them. Ash trees that have died or have suffered adverse impact because of EAB are considered highly dangerous as they can become weak, causing branches to fall at any given moment.

WDM City Code (7-10-7E) does mention “Dead, Diseased or Insect Ridden Trees” on private property, and the city’s authority to call for these trees to be removed, according to the City of West Des Moines website.

Trees that could be dangerous to pedestrians and the public will also be evaluated by Code Enforcement Officers and the Forestry Staff.

Trees could be infested if they have dying branches at the top of the tree, and proof of lots woodpecker activity.
