City of Waukee issued the following announcement on Nov. 5.
On Nov. 5, Waukee Mayor Courtney Clarke issued a proclamation, which will go into effect Nov. 9 at 5 p.m., requiring everyone within Waukee to wear a face covering when in public settings. This applies to persons age three years and older, unless they qualify for an exemption. This action was taken in response to: Iowa being labeled a COVID-19 “red zone” state by the White House Coronavirus Task Force, Iowa reporting record COVID-19 hospitalization numbers and review of Dallas County's data showing that Waukee has now reported four straight days of more than 100 COVID-19 cases (14-day rolling average). Waukee's previous high average was 97 cases, reported on Aug. 31. Iowa also reported a record high 24-hour period for new COVID-19 cases on Nov. 5 of 4,562.
“We have evaluated a number of metrics, including our 14-day case counts and the correlation between our cases and both Dallas County and neighboring Polk County," said Mayor Clarke. "I set the threshold for the proclamation based on three consecutive days at rates surpassing our previous highs, which were set in August during the partial business closures. As of Monday, our 14-day rolling average in Waukee surpassed 100 and surpassed our previous peak by nearly 18 percent. This is an increase in cases over last week of 60 percent. With the recent Halloween festivities and upcoming holidays, it is imperative we take precautions to slow the community spread.”
The proclamation will go into effect Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. to give businesses time to prepare. Signage can be downloaded here now or picked up in the City Hall vestibule beginning Friday, Nov. 6 at 8 a.m. The City Hall vestibule is open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The proclamation will be in effect through Dec. 31, 2020, unless modified or amended.
