Businessluncheon

West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Nov. 3.

The West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce (WDM Chamber) is excited to bring Gary Barta, Director of Athletics at the University of Iowa, to speak at their monthly member luncheon on Thursday, November, 12. This event, which will take place virtually, is open both to members of the WDM Chamber and any other interested individuals in the community.

Gary Barta is currently in his 15th year as the University of Iowa’s Athletic Director. Throughout his tenure, the Waterloo, IA native has spearheaded a variety of upgrades to current Iowa athletic facilities and led the construction of several new ones, including the new Stew & LeNore Hansen Football Performance Center built in 2014. He has also hired many head coaches during his time, including Fran McCaffery (men’s basketball) and Bond Shymansky (women’s volleyball). This year, Barta has been dealing closely with the athletic program’s financial hardships as they try to navigate difficult decisions in the wake of the pandemic.

“We are glad to bring Gary Barta to our virtual luncheon this month,” said Katherine Harrington, President and CEO of the WDM Chamber. “His expertise as the athletic director of a major D1 university will provide our community with timely insight into how to handle managerial and financial affairs, especially during these unprecedented times.”

This luncheon will take place on Thursday, November 12 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. It is free to attend and will be hosted virtually via Zoom. There will be time for Q&A with Gary at the end of the event.
