City of West Des Moines issued the following announcement on Dec. 17.
Please join West Des Moines as we celebrate the work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by encouraging a deserving high school student to apply for our WDM Youth Scholarship Award or nominating an adult or organization for our Community Leadership Award!
Applications and nominations are due by Monday, January 4, 2021.
Award recipients will be announced at the MLK Day virtual celebration hosted by the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce on Friday, January 15, at 11:30 a.m.
These awards are presented annually by the City of West Des Moines Human Rights Commission to the person(s) or organizations that have demonstrated leadership and volunteerism while making significant contributions in the areas of promoting peace and understanding; celebrating diversity, equity, and inclusion; and improving communication and cooperation between diverse populations in the West Des Moines community/schools.
The Youth Leadership Award recipient will receive a minimum of $500. Criteria for the award include:
- High school students who have demonstrated the principles of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for at least two or more years
- Have shown visible and continuing leadership in one or more of the following areas: education, religion, civil rights, or service to the community
- Have not previously received this award
- Are in good academic standing
- Attend high school in West Des Moines
- Are making a difference in West Des Moines
- Have shown visible and continuing leadership in one or more of the following areas: education, religion, civil rights, or service to the community
- Have not previously received this award
