City of West Des Moines issued the following announcement on Dec. 21.
At the regular meeting of the West Des Moines Public Library Board on Tuesday, December 15, members of the Board and library administration reviewed the local situation regarding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and made the decision to maintain a curbside-only model of service until at least January 10, though they will meet the week of January 4 to discuss the matter again.
Board and administrators made the decision based on ongoing high rates of COVID-19 positivity in Polk and Dallas Counties as well as the West Des Moines Community Schools decision to remain with a distance learning model until after winter holiday break.
“The Board of Trustees discussed the matter very thoroughly,” said West Des Moines Public Library Director Darryl Eschete. “They are hopeful that if positivity rates and case counts go down, it will be safe to open doors again after the holidays.”
Curbside pickup and phone reference will continue during library hours (Mon-Thurs, 9 a.m. -7 p.m.; Fri-Sat, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.). DOT Kiosk access and computer/printer usage by reservation will be available starting December 28.
Since March, the Library has created hundreds of hours of story times and other virtual programming. These programs will continue, and the schedule will be noted in the Library’s online calendar.
In the meantime, the 24-Hour Library Kiosk in Valley Junction (located behind the Valley Junction Activity Center) remains available. This self-serve borrow/return kiosk is available to all West Des Moines Public Library card holders in good standing, even as the main building is closed to entry.
