CITY OF WEST DES MOINES: An open letter to WDM residents & businesses regarding Mediacom’s lawsuit

Announcement1

City of West Des Moines issued the following announcement on Dec. 31.

Today, the City of West Des Moines filed a Motion to dismiss Mediacom’s lawsuit challenging our use of the Urban Renewal Law to construct an underground conduit network which internet providers can license to bring reliable, high-speed internet to residents and businesses.

We want you to know we strongly disagree with Mediacom’s allegations, and we have no intention of abandoning our efforts to make this citywide project a reality. All the steps we’re taking are consistent with the language and purpose of Iowa law. That’s how we do things in West Des Moines.

Although we understand that reducing barriers to competition is not always supported by existing industry, the reality is that high-speed internet was identified in our 2020 Citizen Survey as the “most needed improvement” in our neighborhoods and it is an important tool to retain and attract businesses and employees in our community.

We’re committed to installing the infrastructure that can help bring reliable, high-speed internet options to West Des Moines because that’s what you’ve asked us to do. You can have full confidence that our approach is innovative and the result of several years of planning and meetings with residents and business leaders.

Read a detailed explanation about Urban Renewal Law and how it is used in Iowa to advance economic development purposes.
