The Urbandale City Council is seeking help from the community on what to do with an empty lot nearby.

The area in question is a 20-acre lot near the Urbandale Fire Department at 152nd Street and Meredith Drive, said a KCCI article

Urbandale City Manager A.J. Johnson encouraged citizen's input on the project. According to KCCI, he asked, "What is it that we're needing as a community, and particularly on the west side of our city, as we continue to grow? What are the rec-based facilities that we would like to have?”

Reportedly, the city is considering a new aquatic center after closing its indoor pool permanently in March, said KCCI in its article. A draft of a resident survey is expected to be ready in the coming weeks.

The city of Urbandale website says that the project is located at a "key corner" of one of Urbandale's main arterial streets, in the northwest corner of the 200-acre Walnut Creek Regional Park.

Construction on the open space located at this corner was underway in April, according to a City of Iowa, Urbandale Facebook post

On July 13, the City Council approved the hiring of a consultant for $40,000 to perform a scientifically valid survey of Urbandale residents to determine the level of community support for a new recreation facility, according to its website

Options for the location include an aquatic center, recreation center, senior living center or all of the above, according to KCCI.
