Press Release: Des Moines Civil and Human Rights Commission Settles Racial Profiling Case Against National Discount Store

Civil

City of Des Moines issued the following announcement on July 14.

On Tuesday, July 13, 2021, the Des Moines Civil and Human Rights Commission reached a settlement agreement against a national discount dollar chain store that was found to be racially profiling customers of African descent. The case involved two African American females who went into the store to shop, but when they attempted to leave the store, the door was locked, and they were prevented from leaving until their purse was searched.

The Commission found probable cause to believe that the civil rights of the two African American females were violated under Des Moines public accommodations laws. The case was finally settled for one Complainant for $8,600 while the other Complainant chose to pursue further action in state court.
