Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate announced on July 12 that the state experienced a record-high level of new business filings in the 2021 fiscal year.

A news release issued by Pate’s office said Iowans registered the highest amount of new business entities in state history, with 33,260 new businesses registered between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021.

State Rep. Carter Nordman (R-Adel) took to Facebook to praise what turned out to be a new record.

“During a global pandemic, Iowans showed their resilience and started over 33,000 NEW businesses. Iowa is a great place to do business!” the 23-year-old lawmaker shared.

The Gazette reported that the 2021 mark is an increase from 24,481 new businesses registered in the 2020 fiscal year and 24,720 registered in the 2019 fiscal year.

Pate’s office reported that Iowans set records for most new business filings in a single month twice in 2021, beginning the year with 2,940 filed in January only for another record to be set in March with 3,579 new business filings.

“Despite the pandemic, this data shows that Iowa had a substantial amount of economic activity over the last twelve months,” Pate said in the release. “I’m proud the work that my staff put in so that businesses could get off the ground. Although our lobby was closed to the public, we were here working behind the scenes to keep the wheels of commerce moving in Iowa.”

More than 85% of businesses registered with the new Fast Track Filing System that was launched in 2018, according to the release.
