Zeb Noland, a familiar face for the Iowa State Cyclones, will be back on the field this time more than 1,000 miles southeast of Ames as he takes on the role of starting quarterback for the South Carolina Gamecocks in their first game of the season.
Noland initially went to South Carolina where he was on Shane Beamer's coaching staff as a graduate assistant, but will now take the field as starting QB, according to ESPN.
"Zeb Noland, who was a grad assistant coach for South Carolina a few weeks ago, will start at QB for the Gamecocks vs. Eastern Illinois," Brett McMurphy of The Action Network wrote in an Aug. 31 tweet. "He previously played at Iowa State & North Dakota State, starting 7 games at NDSU."
ESPN reported that prior to landing the starting QB role, Noland thought his playing career was over after his North Dakota State team lost to Sam Houston State in the Football Championship Subdivision quarterfinals in May.
Noland led his new team for the first time on Sept. 4 in a home game against Eastern Illinois in the Gamecocks season opener, according to ESPN.
Noland appeared in nine games for Iowa State during the 2017-2018 seasons and had six total touchdown passes, Sports Illustrated reported.
