Iowa women’s soccer scored a pair of unanswered goals and won 2-1 against Northwestern on Sept. 19 at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
The team opened Big Ten with a victory, improving to 7-1-1 on the season, according to Hawkeye Sports, and Wildcats moved to 4-4.
“#Hawkeyes Top Wildcats in B1G Opener,” the University of Iowa women’s soccer wrote on Twitter.
Iowa goalkeeper Monica Wilhelm made seven saves, a season-high, including a clutch corner save in the 87th minute which maintained the victory, Hawkeye Sports reported.
Head coach Dave Dianni said he liked how the team played that afternoon.
“I really liked how we played,” he said on Hawkeye Sports. “I thought the game was going to come down to the midfield, and I thought our midfield had a few more moments in the game than theirs, especially in transition. What a tight Big Ten game, it was two really good Big Ten teams playing back and forth.”
Iowa scored in the 64th and 65th minutes, Northwestern University Sports reported.
Northwestern did take the lead on the second half, but Iowa responded swiftly.
“It’s massive [to get the first win] in the Big Ten, which is probably the deepest it has been since I have been here,” Dianni said according to Hawkeye Sports. “To win at home and to take care of homefield advantage is massive. To start off on a high point, getting three points, and going on the road against Indiana and Purdue, we need to kind of accumulate wins as we go on so this was a great start for us.”
The Hawkeyes head to Indiana to face the Hoosiers at 7 p.m. CT Sept. 23 at the Bill Armstrong Stadium.
