The American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa said it aims to fight any abortion laws that are attempted to be passed after Texas recently passed a bill that bans most abortions after six week of pregnancy.
"Rest assured, we won’t stop fighting for abortion access," the ACLU of Iowa posted on Twitter Sept. 17.
In 2018, Iowa attempted to pass a similar heartbeat bill to the one in Texas, but the Iowa Supreme Court blocked it after deeming it unconstitutional, according to the Simpsonian.
Recently, 60 Iowan legislators have been pushing to change that decision.
The Iowan legislators are asking the Iowa Supreme Court to overturn the 2018 ruling after Texas’ new law was found constitutional, according to the Simpsonian.
The new Texan law that was enacted on Sept. 1 bans most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, according to the Simpsonian.
In May, the Iowa House and Senate passed an amendment nullifying the 2018 Iowa Supreme Court decision that established that the Iowa Constitution protects the right to an abortion, according to The Daily Iowan.
In order to adopt the amendment, it must pass the Legislature by the end of the session in 2024 and be approved by Iowa voters, according to The Daily Iowan.
