Iowa officials recently determined the accepted unemployment benefit eligibility for workers who were fired for not being vaccinated.

“GOP says unemployment benefits hurt Iowa -- except when they’re for the unvaccinated,” Michael O’Grady said via Twitter on Nov. 1. “Gov. #KimReynolds couldn't wait until extended federal benefits expired in September, so she ended them three months early."

Gov. Kin Reynolds previously blamed unemployment benefits as the main reason why employers are having a hard time filling their job positions, Iowa Capital Dispatch reported.

“The workforce shortage is the primary obstacle standing in the way of really turning that encouraging, short-term trajectory into long-term, broad-based progress,” Reynolds said at a news conference Oct. 20.

The official went on to unveil the condition under which residents would be able to collect the financial aid. Last week, Reynolds signed a law that will allow employees to seek medical and religious exemptions from COVID-19 vaccine mandates and that guarantees them qualification for unemployment, effective immediately, NPR reported Oct. 30.

“Federal pandemic-related unemployment benefit programs initially provided displaced Iowans with crucial assistance when the pandemic began,” Reynolds said in a press release, Iowa Capital Dispatch reported. “But now that our businesses and schools have reopened, these payments are discouraging people from returning to work.”
