Iowa nonprofit members reached new records last week as volunteers packed care packages for active-duty military personnel.

The Iowa chapter of the Blue Star Mothers of America began collecting donations earlier this year. Now that they have been packed, this marks the culmination of months of effort in providing care to military troops who won’t be home during the holiday season.

“Jackie and Herman Poggensee assembled shipping boxes for military care packages this morning. These will be packed by Blue Star Mothers of America - Iowa Chapter tomorrow at the museum and then sent off to deployed servicemembers for the holidays,” Iowa Gold Star Military Museum said in a Facebook post Nov. 13.

A record-breaking 200 care packages will be sent to Iowa natives who are serving both domestically and overseas, according to a report by We Are Iowa.

Packages contained necessities including personal hygiene items and additional gifts like handmade stockings, Girl Scout cookies, movies and snacks.

Individuals will begin receiving the care packages within three to four weeks. WHO 13 reported the Blue Star Mothers of Iowa will continue accepting donations year round for those interested in helping curate next year's packages.
