The No. 2 ranked Michigan Wolverines football team recently defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes for the Big Ten championship title.

Going into the game, Michigan was No. 2 and Iowa was No. 13. Michigan won the game 42-3, according to ESPN. This was Michigan's first conference win since 2004 and the Wolverine's are now almost guaranteed a trip to the playoff.

At the beginning of the season, no one was rooting for Michigan and various critics even said that the team’s best days were behind them, according to The Associated Press.

“We defied all expectations,” Wolverines end Aidan Hutchinson said, according to AP. “Nobody ever thought we could do this, especially this season and we did it — in dominant fashion.”

Michigan is now in position to earn the football program’s first national championship since 1997.

"2016 Michigan lost to Iowa, Osu and in the Orange Bowl. This year they beat Iowa, Osu and get to play in the Orange Bowl.... Oooooweeeeee," Micah Wilson wrote in a Dec. 6 Twitter post.

This was the Hawkeye's second straight title game loss. In 2015, Iowa also lost to Michigan State.

“One thing just leads to another sometimes, there are games like that unfortunately,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. “They’re not much fun. I’m not sure the score is totally representative of the two teams.”
