An Iowa transgender student has said he's been told by school officials that he can no longer use the bathroom that matches his gender identity at Spirit Lake High School.
For the past year and a half Ethan Stucker, a 16-year-old student at Spirit Lake High School who identifies as a male, hasn't had any issues using the boy's restrooms at the school, but on Nov. 29 he was told he wasn't allowed to continue doing so, according to KCAU.
"We're working hard to address this situation," Iowa Safe Schools, a nonprofit who's mission is to support safe and nurturing learning environments and communities for LGBTQ and Allied Youth, wrote in a Dec. 3 Facebook post. "Trans students should feel safe and welcome in all schools."
KCAU reported the guidance counselors told Stucker he would face disciplinary action if he continued to use the boy's restroom.
Stucker and his mother told KCAU that he was told to use the unisex bathroom near the teacher's lounge because a student came forward to report they felt uncomfortable with Stucker's presence in the boy's bathroom.
Iowa Safe Schools argued that the actions taken by the school bring up legal concerns regarding Title IX, according to We Are Iowa.
