'Failed public health initiatives': Iowa sees record COVID cases and hospitalizations

Covid 49 edited

Iowa set a new 2021 record this week for all-time-high of new reported COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations following a new wave of cases across the globe.

As of Wednesday, Dec. 15, there are 823 COVID-19 positive patients in Iowa hospitals, and deaths due to the virus are fast approaching 7,700 in Iowa, according to Radio Iowa.

"Reynolds also said that Iowa ended COVID. However, IA has a positivity rate over 12% & more than 84% of those hospitalized are unvaccinated," said comedian and podcast host Patti Vasquez in a tweet referencing an article from Heartland Signal. "Perhaps try taking responsibility for failed public health initiatives instead of taking credit for Dems' work to help all Americans."

The new numbers being reported midway through December are the highest numbers reported in 2021 and a record for people hospitalized due to COVID,-19 according to Radio Iowa. The number from Wednesday is a 6% increase from the previous Wednesday.

Of all the COVID-19 patients currently in the hospital, more than 100 of them are on ventilators and nearly 83% of patients in intensive care units in the state have not been vaccinated against the virus, according to Radio Iowa. The vaccination rate in the state of Iowa was 54.4% receiving both doses of the vaccine as of Dec. 8.
