Council to Conduct Public Hearing on Revised City Map

Demoines

City of Des Moines recently issued the following announcement.

The Des Moines City Council will conduct a public hearing next week to solicit comments and review the latest revisions to the City’s precincts and wards configuration. The hearing to consider ordinances to adopt the new precincts and wards is scheduled for the Dec. 20 council meeting at 5 p.m. in City Hall.

The proposed revisions from the Polk County auditor includes revisions to the proposed precinct and ward boundary amendments approved by council on Nov. 30. For voter convenience, an area between Wards 1 and 3 was adjusted to encompass into one ward as much of the Drake University campus as possible. Additionally, population deviations between the four wards have been adjusted to be more proportionate.

Once the latest boundary amendments are approved by ordinance, they will be forwarded to the Iowa Secretary of State as required by Iowa Code. If the council rejects the Polk County auditor’s recommendations, reasons explaining why will need to be included in the ordinances.

The City precinct and ward boundary amendments follow the 2020 U.S. Census and redistricting efforts approved by the Iowa Legislature.
