Emergency Broadband Program to change in 2022

Wdm

City of West Des Moines recently issued the following announcement.

The positive impact of the Emergency Broadband Program (EBB), which was designed to help lower-income homes enroll in discounted or free internet service during the Covid pandemic, has driven the federal government to make the program more permanent. Effective January 1, 2022, the EBB Program will be renamed the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) and will be extended for five years. The monthly household subsidy will be reduced from $50 to $30.

Now is the time to reach out for assistance. Please visit https://ebb.wdm.iowa.gov for a list of approved Broadband service providers and their offerings in your zip code. If you activate service prior to December 31, 2021, you’ll receive the $50 subsidy through the end of February, at which time the subsidy will decrease to $30. If you activate service after December 31, 2021, you’ll receive the reduced $30 subsidy from your date of activation.

If you already receive the EBB subsidy, your broadband service provider will be reaching out to you to explain any changes to your current service offering related to the transition to ACP.

Iowans who are enrolled in Lifeline, SNAP, Medicaid, Free and Reduced-Price School Lunch or Breakfast Program, Supplemental Security Income, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Veteran and Survivors Pension Benefit, Bureau of Indian Affairs Special Assistance, TANF, Tribal Head Start, or receive a Pell Grant are eligible for EBB and the new ACP program.
