The Anytime Food Program is asking for volunteers and paper goods as part of its January "need of the month."

The Anytime Food Program is operated by the West Des Moines Human Services Department, and it distributes donated and rescued food items to families in need.

"Our volunteer shifts are weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. for individuals ages 14 and up," Mindy Hotovec, an administrative assistant of the Human Services Department, told West DSM News. "Qualities we seek in a volunteer are reliability, integrity, flexibility, interpersonal skills and a friendly, positive attitude."

Despite the constant need for resources and helping hands from the community, those who wish to volunteer are not expected to give their time during inclement weather or other dangerous situations, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We have 72 volunteers currently — we normally have close to 100, but many of our volunteers are retired seniors and have chosen to take a  break from volunteering due to COVID," Hotovec said. "We currently have a need for additional volunteers in both our food pantry and clothing closet."

The West Des Moines Human Services Department has been assisting low-income, elderly and disabled residents since 1979. It serves more than 1,600 households and offers assistance with rent and utilities, handyman services, youth recreation, clothing and food for those struggling with poverty, according to its website.

"The Anytime (Food) Program is available weekdays at 8:30 a.m. and offers bakery goods, fruits, vegetables and more," Hotovec said. "It takes place outdoors at the southeast corner of our building and is available to anyone with a need. Approximately 50 people each day utilize this program. We also have a food pantry that is located inside our building and serves approximately 250 households per month."
