West Des Moines Police Conducting Back to School Traffic & Pedestrian Initiative Beginning August 24th, 2022

Officers with the West Des Moines Police Department in conjunction with the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB), will be conducting high visibility traffic enforcement August 24th – September 2nd, as students return to school in the West Des Moines Community.  Officers will be conducting traffic enforcement in the vicinity of our schools to reduce traffic related injuries and accidents on Iowa roadways.  This Special Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) event will focus on all traffic violations, as well as a heightened awareness on pedestrian safety related to increased traffic movement around the schools.  The West Des Moines Police Department is asking all drivers to please be mindful as there will be an increase in pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic as students return to classrooms around the area.

The safety of the community, roadways and all residents remain a top priority of the West Des Moines Police Department.  This increased enforcement is intended to serve as a reminder for all drivers to obey traffic laws and do their part in keeping Iowa roadways safe.
