The Windsor Heights City Council unanimously adopted a resolution establishing a community 24x7 carbon-free electricity goal at its regular meeting Monday. The resolution outlines the City’s commitment to partner with energy providers, local businesses, and local stakeholders in pursuing carbon-free energy for public facilities, businesses, fleet vehicles and expanding the availability of charging station facilities.
The City has already made efforts to pursue carbon-free initiatives including joining Grow Solar Polk County holding a “Solar Power Hour” event this past August to help make solar power investment more affordable to homeowners. The City also partnered with the Des Moines Street Collective (https://www.dsmstreetcollective.org) by siting a BCycle station in Colby Park to encourage the use of non-motorized transportation.
“The City of Windsor Heights is responsible for promoting the public health and safety of its residents, including access to clean air, clean water and a livable environment,” commented Windsor Heights Mayor Mike Jones in presenting the resolution. “The City is committed in those endeavors that foster a clean energy future for the residents of Windsor Heights.”
The City plans to engage the community in the coming months to develop ways to incorporate carbon-free electricity goals into the delivery of municipal services going forward.
Jones collaborated with the Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement (https://www.iowacci.org) and Iowa Environmental Council (https://www.iaenvironment.org) in the creation of the resolution.
