West Des Moines Community School District issued the following announcement on Jan. 29.
Clive Learning Academy was awarded the Spring 2019 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant from the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation (LCEF), which enabled the school to purchase a classroom set of virtual reality goggles.
The grant paid for half the cost of the goggles, and the elementary school’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) matched their gift.
“We are now able to introduce more world experiences through virtual reality to our 552 students,” said Janelle Green, director of Clive Learning Academy. “Students can now experience thrilling life adventures, such as riding on the world’s tallest roller coaster, visiting exotic rainforests, or sailing on the Pacific Ocean without leaving their classroom.”
Teachers on Wednesday, Jan. 29, received training on how to incorporate VR in their classrooms.
“As a project-based learning school,” Green said, “these goggles will be able to assist our students in answering their driving questions for their projects.”
Green added that she would like to thank Clive Learning Academy’s PTO, especially Jamie Lackey, who made this a possibility for students.
“She researched available grants and prepared the grant application,” Green said. “Thank you, Mrs. Lackey and Clive Learning Academy PTO, for this investment into our students who will be the future problem-solvers for our world.”
