Iowa’s Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley has announced that he will be running for reelection for the 2022 congressional race.
The candidate is now 88 years old.
He is currently the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee and is the oldest Republican senator in addition to being the longest-serving Iowa senator, CNN reported.
"It's 4 a.m. in Iowa so I'm running. I do that 6 days a week. Before I start the day I want you to know what Barbara and I have decided. I'm running for re-election—a lot more to do, for Iowa. We ask and will work for your support. Will you join us,” Grassley posted on Twitter Sept. 24.
Currently, Grassley’s odds are looking promising. He's leading challenger Abby Finkenauer, a former Iowa respresentative, 55% to 27% among likely Iowan voters, according to a Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa poll from September.
Despite his age, Grassley has continually reassured individuals who are concerned about his advanced years that he is ready for the challenge, stating that he still has the same schedule which he did when he was 65 years old, CNN reported.
Among the motivations for Grassley running is the fact that Republicans have no control over the senate. He hopes to balance out the playing field by winning the seat.
