VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL WEST DES MOINES: Valley Performing Arts Department Performs at Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase

Valley High School West Des Moines issued the following announcement.

The Valley High School Performing Arts Department performed at the 2021 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards (IHSMTA) Showcase, presented by EMC Insurance Companies, in honor of the school's achievements for its May production of "Bright Star: School Edition." Valley was one of just nine schools in Iowa selected to perform a musical medley.

The performance will air on Iowa Public Television at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 9.

Ella Bishop, Jack Renda, and Drew Peterson performed as Outstanding Performance in a Principal Role honorees. "The Storytellers" — Janse Barkley, Kellen Casper, Allison Cook, Marisa Cravero, Amara Dorr, Andrew Dunahoo, Kaitlyn Forney, Savannah Fredregill, Jenna Herting, Gabe King, Charlotte Koufer, Maryellen Lerg, Gabe Schebel, Jackson Skahill, Luke Weeklund, and Hunter West — also performed as Outstanding Featured Dancers.

Congratulations to these student performers, the full cast and crew of "Bright Star," and the Valley Performing Arts Department! 

Original post on May 12, 2021 | The Valley High School Performing Arts Department will participate in the 2021 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards (IHSMTA) Showcase, presented by EMC Insurance Companies, in honor of the school's achievements for its May production of "Bright Star: School Edition."

Iowa PBS will broadcast a year-end awards showcase at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 9. The broadcast will feature highlights from several musical productions submitted for adjudication by high schools from across the state this year. Featured performances will be recorded at the Des Moines Civic Center in early June.

The ensemble of Valley’s BRIGHT STAR: School Edition will perform an excerpt from their production for the Showcase, in celebration of the school's receipt of an Outstanding Musical Production Award — the program's highest honor.

Valley High School will also be recognized with the following awards and honors:

  • Outstanding Musical Production
  • Outstanding Ensemble
  • Outstanding Student Orchestra
  • Student Awards
    • Outstanding Performance in a Principal Role: Ella Bishop as “Alice Murphy”
    • Outstanding Performance in a Principal Role: Will Johnson as “Daryl Ames”
    • Outstanding Performance in a Principal Role: Drew Peterson as “Jimmy Ray Dobbs”
    • Outstanding Performance in a Principal Role: Jack Renda as “Billy Cane”
    • Outstanding Featured Dancers: Janse Barkley, Kellen Casper, Allison Cook, Marisa Cravero, Amara Dorr, Andrew Dunahoo, Kaitlyn Forney, Savannah Fredregill, Jenna Herting, Gabe King, Charlotte Koufer, Maryellen Lerg, Gabe Schebel, Jackson Skahill, Luke Weeklund, and Hunter West as “The Storytellers”
  • Special Recognition
    • Special Recognition for Performance in a Principal Role: Lanie Anthan as “Mama Murphy”
    • Special Recognition for Performance in a Principal Role: Ava Neppl as "Margo Crawford"
Additional honors and recognitions for all 78 schools in this year’s program will be available in a special online gallery at DMPA.org that will launch on July 9 in tandem with the Iowa PBS broadcast.

IHSMTA is a yearlong, signature education initiative of Des Moines Performing Arts.
